Tactics[]
- The Mortar is a highly effective crowd control tower, able to defend early even against spawns. It scales strongly into the late game, with high damage for a massive splash radius to cover Hidden Bosses and avoidance to stuns. The tower has very high range at all levels. The only major downsides are its lower damage against single targets and use of a cliff space.
- The Mortar may not be best suited on most maps due to limited cliff space.
- A level 1 Mortar is reliable in early wave defense of both Versus and Survival due to its large splash radius and reasonable damage, effectively clearing away hordes of Normals, Speedies, Slows, and Mysteries.
- One Level 4 Mortar will cover Hiddens, as well as kill Boss1s.
- One level 5 or three to four level 4 Mortars are able to start wiping out Lavas, and will grant large amounts of money to afford upgrading them to cover Hidden Bosses.
- The Mortar pairs well with towers that it clears for, particularly late-game DPS towers such as Golden Commandos, Zeds, Railgunners, Phasers, and Golden Scouts.
- Be careful when using Railgunners with Mortars, as they both take cliff space. In addition, Railgunner has a considerably large placement footprint.
- Commanders and DJs can increase the firerate of both the Mortar and the DPS towers it supports. DJs make upgrades cheaper, while Commanders are better suited for the DPS towers, as the range boost is very much unnecessary for the Mortar. Commander’s Call to Arms ability is extremely useful for helping Mortars clear out large hordes of Lavas, Toxics, Slimes and Fire Spirits.
Trivia[]
- The Mortar has the largest range out of every tower in the game, often reaching outside of the map at level 5 with a Commander's range buff.
- The Mortar is one out of five towers that can be placed on cliffs, followed by the Railgunner, Sniper, Sniper but red, and the Harpoon Hunter.
- The Railgunner, Sniper, and Sniper but red hold a soda can at level 5. The level 5 Mortar previously held a soda can, but as of the 7/22/20 update, it no longer does.
- Though Mortar can't target Hiddens until level 4, it can still damage and possibly kill them if they are caught the Mortar's splash radius while the Mortar is targeting other enemies.
- The Mortar's level 2 upgrade icon is shared by the Railgunner and Elf on their 2nd levels.
- A level 4 Knifer takes the form of a level 4 Mortar. The same goes for the level 5 Knifer but as a level 5 Mortar.
